The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently announced $109 million in Choice Neighborhood Implementation grants through the Choice Neighborhoods program. As a core part of the Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative, Choice Neighborhoods aims to transform communities into vibrant neighborhoods by revitalizing public and HUD-assisted housing and developing sustainable public and assisted mix-income housing. More than just housing, Choice Neighborhoods considers all elements that are essential in creating healthy communities and aims to improve outcomes in education, employment and health, while strengthening networks of support services.
Since 2010, nine Choice Neighborhood Implementation grants totaling $231 million have been awarded to neighborhoods in Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, New Orleans, Seattle (two grants), Cincinnati, Tampa and San Antonio. The grants have generated almost $2 billion in funding that impacts community transformation.
Applications are due on September 10, 2013. HUD is planning on awarding four grants at a maximum of $30 million each. Eligible applicants include Public Housing Authorities, local governments, tribal entities, nonprofits, and for-profit developers applying jointly with a public entity.
