This week, The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced the first-ever Choice Neighborhoods implementation grant awards. Five cities across the nation will receive a combined $122 million to begin neighborhood revitalization efforts. Specifically, the Choice Neighborhoods Initiative aims to transform high-poverty communities into mixed-income neighborhoods by providing access to affordable housing, transit, quality educational opportunities and jobs.

The implementation grantees are:
  • City of Boston & Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation: $20.5 million
  • City of Chicago & Preservation of Affordable Housing, Inc.: $30.5 million
  • City of New Orleans & Housing Authority of New Orleans: $30.5 million
  • San Francisco Housing Authority & McCormack Baron Salazar: $30.5 million
  • Housing Authority of the City of Seattle: $10.7 million

Summaries of each grantee can be found here.

The Choice Neighborhoods Initiative is a major cornerstone of the Obama Administration's Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative - a collaboration between the Departments of Housing and Urban Development, Justice, Education, Treasury and Health and Human Services that strives to bridge public and private resources to transform distressed communities.
