The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) today announced the recipients of the 2011 Sustainable Communities Grants which total over $97 million. Twenty seven communities and organizations will receive Community Challenge grants and 29 regional areas will receive Regional Planning grants.

A partnership between HUD, the Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Sustainable Communities grants will support planning efforts intended to expand housing choices, integrate transportation, workforce and infrastructure investments and address several community revitalization initiatives, including: 1) economic competitiveness, 2) social equity, inclusion and access to opportunity, 3) energy use and climate change, and 4) public health and environmental impact. Two grants were available: The Regional Planning Grants will support large metropolitan and multi-jurisdictional planning efforts while the Community Challenge Planning grants will address single jurisdictions and more localized planning. Both grants must utilize the Sustainable Communities' six Livability Principles as a guide for long-term development initiatives.

More information about the grantees can be found in HUD's official announcement of the awards.
