The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently awarded $600,000 in grants to increase the employment and economic self-sufficiency of low-income individuals and public housing residents. With 85 applications from across the nation, only 12 grants worth $50,000 were awarded to housing authorities, cities and states that struggle with high unemployment rates. Specifically, the funding will be used to hire a Section 3 Program Coordinator, who is responsible for connecting public housing residents to HUD-funded employment, contracted employment with local businesses and job training opportunities.
As the recently released poverty data suggests, families continue to face great challenge in the midst of a struggling economy. This grant will provide low-income communities with a critical resource as it jumpstarts employment and connects residents with the opportunities necessary to begin building assets, including employment experience, financial savings and community resources.
