For the fourth year in a row, The National Dairy Council and General Mills Foodservice have teamed up and are now accepting applications for the Fuel Up Breakfast Grants program. Funding provided through these grants should go toward schools working to develop or expand their breakfast programs.

A study by the Food Research Action Center (FRAC) found that there is significant evidence of the link between eating breakfast and learning. Skipping breakfast, the report found, is “associated with quantifiable negative consequences for academic, cognitive, health, and mental health functioning.” Despite the benefits, a different study conducted by FRAC found that participation in breakfast programs remains low. Since good school breakfast programs can help transform schools and support the entire school community – students, parents, teachers, and administrators – it is important to increase school breakfast participation.

K-12 schools that participate in the National School Breakfast Program are eligible to apply for up to $2,000. Schools should also have a breakfast participation level of less than 40 percent, as well as demonstrated support from their principal, district school nutrition director, and school nutrition manager.

Applications are due July 31. For more information and to apply, please click here.
