The Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) has announced funding for the 2013 AmeriCorps State and National Grants. In 2013, CNCS will fund AmeriCorps volunteers dedicated to addressing challenges in the following areas: disaster services, economic opportunity, education, environmental stewardship, healthy futures and veterans and military families.

Each year in communities nationwide, 70,000 AmeriCorps volunteers engage in a year of service at more than 15,000 local and national organizations. In the midst of a distressed economic climate, AmeriCorps volunteers are particularly valuable to nonprofits and community-based organizations that may not have the resources needed to cover full-time, paid positions. Gaining practical work experience and engaging in civic life, AmeriCorps volunteers may have a variety of positions, such as working in schools to improve student achievement or assisting veterans returning from combat.

In addition to funding AmeriCorps volunteers in positions focused on the six issue areas described above, the 2013 grant competition will be piloting a Governor & Mayor Initiative. This new initiative provides governors the opportunity to identify a pressing need and partner with mayor and other partnerships to address this challenge by deploying AmeriCorps volunteers. As stated in the Notice of Funding Available (NOFA), governors and mayors in geographic locations where other city, state, and place-based initiatives are under way are encouraged to partner with these public/private partnerships, as well as city or neighborhood focused federal initiatives. This initiative may be valuable for communities that currently have Promise Neighborhoods or Choice Neighborhoods grants, as well as communities that may be implementing similar place-based initiatives.

Eligible applicants include public or private nonprofit organizations, including faith-based and other community organizations, institutions of higher education, government entities within states or territories and Indian Tribes.
