Last week, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) officially launched
Summer Jobs+ - an initiative that aims to provide summer jobs and other employment opportunities to low-income and disconnected youth nationwide. The White House
announced Summer Jobs+ in January, highlighting the need to provide youth with opportunities to gain valuable job skills and remain connected to school and the labor market. The initial announcement challenged the government and the private sector to create more than 250,000 summer jobs and internship opportunities. According to last week’s announcement, both the government and private sector have surpassed this challenge, providing more than 300,000 summer jobs for youth throughout the country.
The Summer Jobs+ website contains a job bank, which is populated by information from 10 job posting websites and employers nationwide. Using the job bank, youth can search for jobs, internships and mentorship opportunities within their communities.
In addition to the job bank, the Summer Jobs+ website has several resources and tools that local communities and employers can use to design jobs, internships and other mentoring opportunities that will help disconnected youth gain valuable life and work skills.
