In November of 2011, the Spotlight on Poverty and Opportunity released “Spotlight on the States”—an interactive resource map intended to provide up-to-date information about poverty, unemployment and other key issues that can help community residents, researchers and policymakers improve the well-being of children and families.

Now, the organization has updated the tool to better serve as a platform for collecting state-level information on efforts to reduce poverty and promote opportunity. The resource map now includes:
  • New design of individual state pages: Updated layout to better navigate through data, policies, research and news.
  • New state poverty data and statistics: A compilation of new data, including high school graduation, participation in Medicaid and SCHIP, and information on the state justice system. Each data point links to its source.
  • New state policies: A listing of key education policies in addition to new state tax, asset-building and work support policies that help support low-income families; includes links to state or national organizations that track the issue.
  • State government: Information regarding the state governor and legislature.
