This month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced $4.8 million in funding to help build food systems and fight hunger and food insecurity in communities throughout the nation. As part of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture’s Community Food Projects program, the awards were made to 27 local organizations that will help meet the needs of low-income individuals, increase the food self-reliance of low-income communities and promote comprehensive responses to local food, farm and nutrition issues.

It is estimated that more than 20.2% of households with children are food insecure, making nutrition programs and access to healthy foods a critical component of community revitalization. The USDA’s grant announcement builds on the federal government’s commitment to addressing access to healthy food, which is funded through programs such as the Healthy Food Financing Initiative.
