This week, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) awarded $14 million to 45 school-based health centers throughout the nation. Made possible by the Affordable Care Act, the funds awarded this week are the second in a series of awards that will allow already exciting health care centers to expand their capacity and modernize their facilities.

School-based health centers are a critical component of quality healthcare for children and adolescents, particularly those that have chronic health conditions. In addition to providing primary care, school-based health centers generally provide mental health care, substance abuse counseling, dental health, and health education services. The $14 million awarded this week will allow an additional 53,000 children in 29 states to receive school-based healthcare, in addition to fostering job growth in areas of construction, renovation and equipment.
