On June 14, the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill, that includes $80 million for Promise Neighborhoods. This is a more than $20 million increase in funding for Promise Neighborhoods from the 2012 fiscal year budget. If passed by the House, the funds will be allocated in planning and implementation grants by December.
While the money is not guaranteed yet, the Senate’s actions are a very important step in securing funding for Promise Neighborhoods.
Other parts of the bill provide money for child care and Head Start, funds to stop healthcare fraud, increasing the maximum Pell Grant award, assisting young people with disabilities find employment, prevention efforts for chronic diseases and a new provision banning colleges and universities from using Federal educational resources on advertising and recruitment.
